Chapter Eighteen

Christian

Christian couldn’t believe this was all happening. Even if it had been over a week since the alpha wolf had met April, he hadn’t planned on telling her about anything regarding his shifter nature, or his past, until she at least was his mate. Maybe I can at least get away with leaving out the parts about my past. If April heard those stories, she’d leave me in an instant. No, it isn’t time yet for that.

Glancing back, Christian stared at the human woman he dragged along in his wake. Dragged maybe wasn’t the right word, even if he was gripping onto her wrist as they walked. No, she was marching along right behind him, her brilliant sandy eyes fixed on him save for when they had to climb a steep slope or a root that arched above the ground.

But now she gazed at him curiously, her eyes narrowing to slits. “What?”

“Nothing,” he said as he slowed to a stop. Glancing around, he released her wrist. “This is as good a spot as any.”

“I didn’t realize we were gonna go this far out from your house,” she said, shivering from the cold of the night. Her eyes flicked all over the place, as if she were expecting an ambush, and Christian remembered that humans didn’t have as good of eyesight as shifters did, especially at night. Sighing, he stepped a bit closer to her, allowing her to feel the comfort of Christian’s body acting as a barrier should another shifter show up from behind him. She looked up at him. “I was expecting to go to the side of your house or something.”

“Well, this way you can yell and scream all you want at me, for deceiving you about my true nature,” Christian said with a smile. “Finley won’t hear us, which is what you were worried about, right?”

Adorably, she shifted her weight from one foot to the other and murmured. “I suppose…” There was a pause, and then she continued, louder. “Your...true nature?”

He nodded. “I know you were somewhat in a state of shock after Griffin shifted, and then I came along with a bunch of my other kin, but surely you remember the beasts you saw.”

Eyes widening and brows furrowing, April looked as if she’d just seen a ghost float above Christian’s head. Her arms tightened around her chest, which Christian’s eyes were drawn to. Even now, during this serious talk, Christian’s desire for her only grew. He wasn’t sure how long he could hold himself back, especially now that he’d brought her back to Gray Rock.

“I-I remember that dragon, and the giant wolves,” April said. “But I still can’t believe it all. I mean, I’ve been interviewing people all over Salem for a variety of stories to write, and without fail every one of them mentioned some shapeshifters, or at least the beast part of it.” Something flashed her in eyes, and she stared up at Christian. “Mr. Finch was telling me about seeing a dragon in the sky.
